Basics of Sewing class

  • Guild 1501 Fulford Street Kalamazoo, MI, 49001 United States (map)

Have you been wanting to learn to sew but feel totally intimidated by your machine? You are not alone — and this class is for you.

This beginner-friendly class is designed for folks with zero sewing experience. We’ll go step by step and focus on building comfort and confidence as you get to know your (a) machine.

We will cover common sewing terms & tools, threading your machine, winding a bobbin, changing a needle and other basics to get you started!

The class runs about 2 hours, and afterward there will be open studio time with instructors available to help you start a simple scrunchie or tote bag if you’d like to keep practicing.

Space is limited to 6 participants to keep the class hands-on and relaxed. Attendees will be chosen randomly via lottery and notified if they are chosen by March 15th. In order to confirm your spot in the class you will be required to respond via email within 48 hours (by March 17th). If you are unable to take the spot, we will pass it along to another person in the lottery.

Instructor: Rebecca Barr (she/her)

Rebecca has a heart for creating and has spent the past ten years learning to sew alongside experienced makers whenever she can. She enjoys quilting all kinds of fun and whimsical pieces and has recently begun exploring the art of garment sewing as well. She believes sewing isn’t about perfection—it’s about enjoying the process, building skills step by step, and growing in confidence with every project.

A mom of two with a background in music and nonprofit work, Rebecca finds deep meaning in sharing what she’s learned and cultivating a welcoming, encouraging space where others feel empowered to create and learn.
